MWD Level 4 Induction Activity

Digital Storytelling

Digitals stories come in many forms: books for toddlers with audio sound effects, digital photo albums, mobile phone images/audio recording, stories read onto tape/cd and used for long car journeys, DVDs of films, web-based iPlayer, video-on-demand services, blogs – the list goes on!

Stories may be told using different media – text, graphics, audio, video, animation and in some game situations, as haptic feedback.

Level 4 students were tasked with creating a video-based digital story entitled “I spy with my little eye…” and present it to the class. The results are below!

Calling all web students – did you know…

… that UX designers are commanding high salaries at the moment?

User Experience

So, all you people taking, or interested in User Interaction / Experience / Interface / Design, you’ll find employers are particularly looking for individuals who can perform (and I quote) the following:

“YOU MUST BE A RUTHLESS DESIGNER ABLE TO POINT OUT A POOR DESIGN AND EXPLAIN HOW YOU CAN MAKE IT BETTER. WE ARE LOOKING FOR A CONFIDENT, NATURAL LEADER”

You could just end up with a salary of up to 70k if this subject is your kind of thing! See the full list of  See UI Designer Jobs.

Research for designing a skiing app

Level 5 Multimedia and Games Design students undertook research for a Ski App they are developing as part of their studies. To help understand what skiing is all about they had a Ski lesson on the dry slope in Gloucester. Grasping the pain that skiers go through every time they put their ski boots on was an important part of the day.

Great weather for our research trip to establish the ergonomic issues with mobile devices and skiing!

After we’d taken off those agonising ski-boots we all looked quite cheerful, even poor Chris with the ice-pack after a contretemps with the ski-tow! Nina remembered that she goes skiing regularly – every 20 years!

The tutors, Nina, Paul & Lewis, joined in by taking part in the activity as well! The best Ski App’s will be displayed at COMX14 on 1st May 2014. See http://comx.glos.ac.uk for more details.

Job: Creative Skillset Trainee Finder – Industry opportunities for students and alumni

This message should be highly profited upon for those interested in getting a foot in the industry!

Read on to find out how Creative Skillset can help you:

Creative Skillset Trainee Finder

Creative Skillset would like to let you know about an exciting opportunity for your students and alumni to take part in a scheme which could lead to a first step into their industry of choice.

We would like to make your students and alumni aware of Trainee Finder, our new training placement scheme for the film, TV, animation and games industries. We want them to bring their passion and talent to the industry and to give them the chance of getting excellent practical experience.

We are particularly interested in recruiting students and alumni from Ticked courses, who will be eligible to apply as long as they have had less than 12 months paid industry experience.

Please note that students must have graduated within the last 18 months or be able to provide two industry references.

If your students apply and are successfully accepted onto the scheme they will go onto a database that companies can access and they may receive an offer of a training placement in their chosen industry – a vital first foot in the door. All our placements attract a training allowance to cover the trainee’s cost of living whilst they train – and the training will be coming directly from industry so it couldn’t be more relevant.

This scheme is great news for those courses accredited with the Creative Skillset Tick and a brilliant opportunity for students to get experience of industry as soon as they graduate.  I would be grateful if you could promote this to your students and alumni and look forward to seeing this bright new talent embarking on their careers.

For more details please visit their website – www.creativeskillset.org/traineefinder

If you have any questions, please get in touch with Ruth Brooks – ruthnb@creativeskillset.org – quoting the CT web site, as the location you heard this from.
